The COMES Initiative

In 2008, the Swiss Government launched the nano-tera.ch initiative, centered on the research, development and application of micro, nano and information technologies to embedded systems, networks and software to support health, security and environmental monitoring. The intrinsic value of the underlying research is to bridge traditional disciplines, ranging from electrical engineering and computer/communication sciences to micro/nano-mechanical systems engineering, biomedical sciences, etc., with the objective of deepening the understanding of enabling technologies and reducing scientific concepts to practice, as well as of mastering the novel challenges of engineering tera-scale complex systems. Within the nano-tera initiative, educational projects are foreseen as well: COMES belongs to this class of projects.
